Xiaodong Zhu is a professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Prior to joining the HKU in 2022, he was a professor in the economics department at the University of Toronto. His research areas are macroeconomics, growth and development, and the Chinese economy.

My main research interests include education and labour economics, and applied microeconometrics. I am a Research Fellow of the IZA and the GLO.

I graduated with a BA and MA in Economics from the University of Oslo, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge (in 1998). Before coming to Dundee as a professor in 2014, I lectured at the University of Kent as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader. I have also previously worked at Statistics Norway, Keele University and University of Warwick.
